25 years after the September 11, 2001 attacks, a new United Nations report warns that al-Qaeda has expanded significantly. The group and its affiliates are estimated to have around 25,000 terrorists worldwide, far more than before the 9/11 attacks. The network is now described as multipolar, with no single headquarters, and several regional branches operating across Africa, West Asia and Somalia. The Sahel region has become a key hub. The recruitment is driven by conflict, poverty and online propaganda, with children among those targeted. It also highlights the use of encrypted platforms, artificial intelligence and modified commercial drones in planning and carrying out attacks.
